High tenacity and high modulus PE fiber, also called the Ultra High Molecular WerthPE (UHMWPE) fiber, is a kind of high technology and high performance fiber bornat the beginning of the 1990s.As one of the worlds three high technology fibers (carbon fiber, aramid fiber, hightenacity and high moulded PE fiber), UHMWPE fibers tenacity is the highestin all fibers with its high molecular weight, high interlinking, high degree oforientation and high crystallinity. Its tenacity is 15 times to high quality steeland 10 times to normal chemical fiber. This fiber also has the characteristicsof low density, high modulus, UV resistance, corrosion resistance, outstandinganti-impact and anti-incision.It also can be widely used in national defense weaponry, such as light weight andhigh performance bulletproof plates, bulletproof helmets, soft bulletproof vestsand anti-thrust vests. Other applicative fields are composite materials for aviation,spaceflight, ocean shipping, ropes for navy vessel, tow nets for ocean halieutics,anti-storm woven nets, sports equipment and construction reinforcementcomposite materials.At present, there are only the DSM (Holland), HONEYWELL (the USA), SANSEI (Japan)can produce this fiber and all of these threes annual output are only 4,500MT.Since the 1990s, this fiber was stipulated by the Coordinating Committee aboutthe blockage of the techniques and technology. The products couldnt be sold toSocialist countries for national defense applications.
