The monolith consists of parallelchannels, separated by thin porous walls. The channels are open at one end, butblocked at the other. During operation, the exhaust gases are forced to flow throughthe walls and the gases can be able to escape through the micro pores, but theparticulate matters are too large to escape and trapped in the filter walls.Since the precious metals are coated onto the inside surface of filter, which lowersthe soot burning-off temperature, the soot particulates trapped in ceramic wallswill be oxidized into gaseous compounds, meanwhile other harmful exhaust gasesare also converted into harmless compounds. This high oxidation rate of particulatematters helps the automatic regeneration.Conversion of diesel particulate matter in the catalyst depends on the compositionof the particulates and the sulfur content of the fuel. Our CDPF, equipped withporous ceramic particulate trap, achievable particulate matter reductions amountto over 90% in terms of mass. However, low sulfur diesel fuel is recommendedfor best catalyst performance because the formation of sulfate fraction at hightemperature reduces finally the performance of particulate matter reduction.
