Name:Cat-from “Sketchbook of Flowers and Animals”Dynasty:Ming Dynasty Artist:Shen Chou (1427-1509) Printing Size:Length: 34.80cm / Width:54.50 cm Illustrator:Shen Chou was a native of Ch’ang-chou (Soochow), Kiangsu province. The son of a scholar-artist, he painted in the family tradition and his style eventually surpassed that of his teachers. After the age of 40, he adopted a freer notion of resemblance, an evocative ideal of likeness that suggested much more than the image itself stated. He is also considered the founder of the Wu School of painting. The album, from which this leaf comes, consists of 16 leaves and was done in 1494, when Shen Chou was 67 years old. Depicted are a magnolia branch, an iris, a lily, a lotus and frog, a grape-vine, an amaranth, a cock, a duck, a cat and a donkey. In his inscription at the end, Shen Chou says, ”Playing with the ink, I have produced this sketchbook. I follow the model and lay out the form. Such a past-time certainly suits my leisure….” Not one to seek mere resemblance, Shen Chou has certainly stepped beyond the ordinary to create a lively and spontaneous study of a cat as shown in this leaf. The engaging psychological presence of the cat done in monochrome ink is complemented by its curled position that contrasts with the angular frame of the painting.Other:These above pictures are reprints of the famous paintings housed in National Palace Museum.
