Polyetherether ketone, PEEK, is a kind of excellent thermoplastic engineeringplastics with high-temperature resistance. It has good mechanical propertiesand resistance to chemicals, abrasion and hydrolysis and has goodself-lubricating properties. It can be easily processed and can be used asstuffing for carbon fiber and molybdenum disulfide to improve their lubricatingand mechanical properties.PEEK has wide applications in many areas, such as aeronautic, machinery,electronics, chemical and automobile industries. It can be used to producemechanical elements, such as gears, bearings, piston rings, support rings,seal rings, valve plates and abrasion-proof rings.It has high temperature resistance. PEEK has a high glass transition temperatureand melting point (334oC) and therefore can be safely used inhigh temperature environment. Its thermal transformation temperature is ashigh as 316oC, with its continuous operation temperature being 260oC.PEEK has a kind of plastics with both stiffness and ductility. It endurance underalternative stress is superior to almost all other plastics, nearly comparableto alloy materials.PEEK has excellent lubricating property, suitable for application withrequirements of low coefficient of friction and resistance to abrasion. Whenmixed with carbon fiber and graphite, its self-lubricating properties will befurther improved.PEEK has excellent resistance to chemical and it can only be dissolved byconcentrated sulfuric acid. Its resistance to corrosion is similar to nickelsteel.PEEK is very stable. A 1.45mm thick PEEK sample without any other flameretardant additives can have good enough fire resistance properties,even meeting the most strict fire resistance standards.PEEK has excellent peeling resistance property and therefore can be usedto produce electric or electromagnetic wire with very thin cladding, whichcan be safely used in rigorous environments.Among all kinds of resin, PEEK has the best fatigue resistance property.PEEK has very good radiation resistance, even superior to polystyrene,which has excellent radiation resistance. It can be used to make highquality wires, which can be used in environments with an irradiationdose over 1,100Mrad.It has good resistance to hydrolysis. PEEK and its composites can keepstable in water and high voltage vapor. This kind of material has satisfactorystability when used in high temperature and high voltage water.
