Liquorice or Licorice (Mulethi) is a tall, erect herb, growing upto about 1.5 metres in height. The Botanical name of the herb is Glycymhiza glabra. The dried roots and underground stems or rhizomes of the plant constitute the drug. The root of the plant is a laxative and expectorant.The significance of Liquorice roots lies in the fact that it serves as an excellent remedy for relieving pain, discomfort and other symptoms caused by acrid matter in the stomach. The herb is a recognized home remedy for sore throat, dry cough, myopia, constipation, stomach ulcer, muscular pains, baldness, wounds and healing corns. Additionally, liquorice is found in some soft drinks, and is in some herbal teas where it provides a sweet aftertaste.
